One of the biggest struggles many parents face is losing touch with who they were before parenthood. Having children is a wonderful experience, but it’s hard to be a parent and still enjoy the old hobbies you once did. This is especially true during the toddler years and when you have children in school who participate in a variety of school activities. However, while it may be difficult at times, it is still possible to enjoy the hobbies you enjoy. In fact, not only is it possible, but it’s something you should do.

Many parents feel guilty when they think about doing something for themselves that takes time away from their children. If this is something you struggle with, then the first thing you need to do is understand that it’s okay for you to do things for yourself that you enjoy. After all, once your kids graduate from high-school they will be off living their own lives and you will need to have some hobbies of your own to take away the empty-nest syndrome. It doesn’t matter if you enjoy going to the movies, having barbeques with friends, going to the casinos or going to a live concert — you have a right to do these things.

It’s understandable that you may not have a lot of time to go out when you’re running from dance recital to ballgame to the PTA meetings, but there are ways to find time for yourself at home too. Set aside an hour each night just for you. You can spend this time reading a book, playing games at the online casino, taking a long relaxing bath, watching your favorite television show, etc. The point is that this time is set aside just for you. Having hobbies and being a parent at the same time is possible, you just have to make the time to do it.
