The Importance of Child Proofing Your Home

Your home is a place of love and support for your child, but it can also be a place of accidents and potential dangers for a small child. That is why child proofing your home is one of the most important steps that you can take to protect your little one from harm. Dangers can lurk in cabinets, stair cases, backyards and other places that you may not have thought to be sources of them before. There are numerous small steps that you can take to remedy these problems. Many of them cost little to nothing to do but can make a hue difference in your child’s safety.

If you have a pool in your backyard, you should install a fence around the perimeter of your pool and install door alarms on any that offer direct access to the pool area. This ensure that your toddler will not have unsupervised access to the pool. Your cabinets should have child locks put on them and any dangerous chemicals and cleaning supplies should be stored high up and out of reach. The child locks can be found at any retail store that sells infant items and are relatively inexpensive. On your staircases you should install baby gates that will block a child from a dangerous fall.

If there are sharp corners on your furniture, you can pad them with foam to keep them from falling and getting a dangerous bump or cut. Electrical outlets should also have plastic guards put into them to keep a small one from putting fingers or items into them, which can result in a shock. Appliances should also be kept well out of reach, especially in the kitchen. Cords are a ready way for a child to pull an item down on them and be injured. These steps can make a huge difference in making a safe environment for your child to grow up in.
